Committee elects publication editors Re-elected Daily Cougar editor says he will look at revamping paper's Internet version Cougar News Staff The Student Publications Committee on Thursday re-elected Matt Dulin editor in chief of The Daily Cougar for the summer and fall and chose Katherine Mayse as the editor of the 2005 Houstonian yearbook. "I couldn't be happier than where I am," Dulin, a sophomore communication major and this semester's editor in chief, told the committee. Dulin said he wants to look at improving the newspaper's hiring process, perhaps by drawing up contracts for staff members, and hopes to form a task force to investigate improvements to the Cougar's online edition. "I think (the online paper) needs to be a more unique product," Dulin said. Dulin said he faces the graduation of a number of seniors on the newspaper's staff, and said he doesn't know how he will fill those positions. "It'll be a lot of praying," he said. "I'll go to every length to find new people." He said he will begin accepting applications for the summer and fall staffs immediately at the Cougar offices, Room 160, Communication Building. Dulin was the only candidate for Cougar editor. Mayse, also a sophomore communication major and the only applicant who met the qualifications for yearbook editor, was elected although she was unable to attend the SPC meeting. Committee members said they were concerned about Mayse's absenteeism and asked whether anyone present could speak of the work she has done as Campus Life editor for this year's Houstonian. "She does well with layouts, and she writes very well," Jessica Brown, the yearbook's organizations editor, said. However, photographer Matt DeFiore expressed concern. "I work with her, but I've only seen her three times," he said. "She's not really available." The committee will next meet in September, but it
did not set a date for that meeting.
