Coogs find Aggies offensive with 8 runs, TAMU avenges last season's NCAA losses

Cougar Sports Services

Sometimes history repeats itself, but sometimes it reverses itself entirely.

Houston (14-21) never got even a toehold, as the Texas A&M (No. 13) jumped on the Cougars from the get-go and never jumped off, thumping the visitors 8-1 at Olson Field on Tuesday.

Pin Lim/The Daily Cougar
Senior Thanos Papavasiliou came off the bench and turned in a solid 2-3 effort at the plate.

TAMU notched a pair of runs in the first inning, setting the tone for an evening of opportunistic scoring by the efficient Aggie offense that took advantage of nearly every chance that came its way.

The Aggies did the most damage in the second, scoring four runs off two different pitchers to bring the score to 6-0. Freshman starter Shea Hancock left the game after allowing two runs without an out, bringing his final totals to three earned off three hits in one official inning of work.

Sophomore Justin Vaclavik allowed the other two runs in the second and pitched the third without allowing a run. Sophomore Travis Mays relieved Vaclavik in the fourth, and allowed two runs in the next two and two-thirds innings.

Sophomore Austin Sumerlin and junior Ricky Putnam each pitched an inning of scoreless baseball in the eight and ninth, respectively.

The Aggies got solid performances from their hitters top-to-bottom, with the left side of their infield doing the most damage. Shortstop Cliff Pennington and third baseman Austin Boggs went a combined six out of 10 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Starting pitcher Robert Ray pitched five scoreless innings and allowed only four hits.

Houston's only run was sent home by sophomore Travis Tully in the seventh inning.

The Cougars now travel to St. Louis to face Saint Louis for a three-game set.
