Pair of wins gives UH steam

By Jay Gandy

The Cougar tennis team added another ray of sunshine to an already beautiful day out at the John E. Hoof Varsity courts by winning two matches Tuesday against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Sam Houston State.

Houston took the first match against the Islanders 6-1, with sophomore Miranda Foley nearly completing the sweep before dropping a third set tiebreaker 10-8. The marathon match lasted more than two hours and was still in the first set by the time the five other matches were finished.

Junior Diana Martin was just about perfect Tuesday, defeating both of her singles opponents without losing a single game.

The remaining five Cougar players dropped a total of six games the entire match, with junior Diana Martin and sophomore Kami Miller each blanking her opponent 6-0, 6-0.

Match No. 2 against the Bearkats went even more smoothly as the Cougars completed a 6-0 sweep over a Sam Houston squad that came into the match with some confidence. Miller quickly dashed the Bearkats' hopes as she dispatched Samantha Edelman 6-0, 6-0 in 35 minutes. Junior Biljana Dimovska and sophomore Yolandi Terblanche also blanked their opponents.

Foley was able to rebound with little rest between matches and take care of Emma McDougal 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 1 singles slot. Karine Urbin, the lone senior on the Cougar squad, ended her career on the Houston campus on a high note with a pair of 6-1, 6-0 victories. Urbin, who will be studying occupational therapy at the University of Texas Medial Branch next year, felt the emotions of her final home match.

"I'm really sad about it," Urbin said following the match. "Obviously I'll miss the team atmosphere and the traveling, but I'm still going to be around the team and at all of the matches next season."

The wins put the Cougars at 12-9 on the season and give them momentum heading into the postseason.

Next, UH must travel to Louisville for the Conference USA tournament, which begins Thursday. The Cougars will be the No. 3 seed in the tournament.
