Gogue decides to keep search open President says he wants to find a better 'fit' for provost Cougar News Services University President Jay Gogue announced Thursday that he will not choose any of the six candidates for provost who have visited the campus, saying the search process for the UH and UH System's academic chief will continue. "Although we had several very well-qualified candidates whose experience and background would have made a very good provost, I decided that we need a better 'fit' for the University of Houston System and the University of Houston at this time in our history," Gogue said in a statement. Gogue said the search process for a provost and System vice chancellor for academic affairs may resume in August. In the meantime, interim Provost Jerald Strickland will continue to hold the office. The provost position has been vacant since September, when Edward P. Sheridan stepped down. A 17-member Systemwide search committee, chaired by Honors College Dean Ted Estess, identified and interviewed six candidates for the job, all of whom visited the campus in February and March: Sharon Stephens Brehm of Indiana University Bloomington; Richard Edwards of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; Cristina González of the University of California, Davis; Elizabeth Langland of UC Davis; Charles Louis of Georgia State University; and Luanna Meyer of Massey University in New Zealand. The provost oversees all academic aspects of the
University, from faculty hiring, promotion and tenure to curriculum, scholarships
and classroom technology. As the vice chancellor for academic affairs,
he or she also coordinates those areas at the other System universities.
