UH wins in first round of tourney Cougar Sports Services The Cougars are still alive in the Conference USA Championships. Not that this was in any doubt, since all 14 teams will play at least four matches regardless of outcome. But the Cougars are still on the path to reaching the finals. Houston, the No. 3 seed in the tournament, defeated No. 14 Saint Louis 4-0 Thursday in the first round of competition, which ends Monday. No.1 Tulane and No. 2 Texas Christian both had first-round byes. The Cougars grabbed the doubles point early by winning the first two decisions. The team of sophomore Miranda Foley and junior Biljana Dimovska did not finish its match because the No. 2 and 3 teams did the dirty work. Junior Diana Martin and senior Karine Urbin won their match 8-2, 8-2, and the team of sophomores Yolandi Terblanche and Kami Miller took care of business 8-1. With the doubles point, the Cougars needed only three wins in singles to defeat SLU. Terblanche, Miller and Urbin wrapped up the match in short order when each player defeated her opponent by a 6-0, 6-1 score. Send comments to dcsports@mail.uh.edu |
