Adams' super run wows Cougar track fans

by Christian Schmidt
The Daily Cougar

The exploits of a Cougar alumna outshone the efforts of her former teammates and the other collegians in attendance at the Tom Tellez Track and Field Invitational on Sunday.

Former Cougar Jenny Adams ran the second-fastest time in the world this year in the 100-meter hurdles, her best event. The time was not legal because of a wind above the allowable limit, but it is still an excellent time, especially this early in the outdoor season.

It was also the first time she has run the event in competition this year. Adams is just beginning her outdoor season, which will continue throughout the summer in preparation for the U.S. Olympic Trials in August and the Olympic Games in September.

"I'm really happy about the time," Adams said. "Actually, a strong wind hurts me just like most professional hurdlers, because it really pushes you up on the hurdles and knocks you off your rhythm."

Adams finished her UH career three years ago as one of the most decorated UH track athletes ever. This season, she has one goal -- winning a medal at the Olympics.

"I really need to win a medal, I think," Adams said. "My contract with Nike is up at the end of this year.

The current crop of Cougars also performed well, winning eight events. Senior Jason Edwards won the long jump with a jump of 7.67 meters. Freshman Tristian Whitley won the high jump with a mark of 2.15 meters. Junior Stanford Routt won the 100-meter with a time of 10.37 seconds, his best time this season. Carey LaCour won the 200-meter dash in 20.65 seconds, finishing ahead of Routt. Houston also won the men's 4x100-meter relay with a time of 40.35 seconds.

On the women's side, Houston also had some strong results. Freshman Caresir Hamilton won the women's high jump with a 1.73 meters. The women's team won both the 4x100 relay with a time of 45.67 and the 4x400 relay in 3:47.95.

Houston's next event will be the Conference USA Championships May 13-15 in Louisville, Ky.
