Cougars roll 1-1 split

Houston dominates in Game 1, fails to hold off 49ers in Game 2

The Cougars didn't get a chance to stretch out their paws and relax, but they were able to at least bring a bit of food back to their young.

Because of rain, Houston's three-game series with Charlotte became a two-game set Sunday, and the Cougars split the series 1-1 with the 49ers.

The site of junior Kim Nesloney was a familiar one to Cougar fans after Nesloney drew a school-record four walks in Game 1 Sunday.

Houston took Game 1 by an 8-1 score behind a barrage of offense from up and down the lineup, including a school-record-tying four walks by junior Kim Nesloney.

It happened in the third inning. The Cougars scored six runs, batting around and hitting for the cycle as a team -- junior Jenliee Skender's eighth home run of the season and freshman Jamie Adams' triple coupled with a handful of single and doubles.

The Cougars added another run in the bottom of the fifth to push their advantage to the final 8-1 tally. Senior Melissa Lynch walked with the bases loaded, scoring sophomore Jaci Gonzalez.

Senior Jamie Falco was dynamite for Houston all game. After allowing one run in the first inning, Falco shut out the 49ers without allowing a hit for six innings, striking out five batters in her final home game as a Cougar and improving her season record to 7-2.

Game 2 did not run as smoothly for Houston, as the Cougars couldn't take advantage of an 8-3 hitting advantage over the 49ers. Charlotte took the game 4-3 behind a pair of homeruns.

With the Cougars holding a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth inning, Charlotte parlayed a walk and a single. Its only real offense of the game came when Jessica Moore hit a three-run homer to right center field off senior Jenny Johnson. Sophomore Brooke Johnson nearly pulled off a miraculous catch on the play.

Junior Kristen Glowacz answered the Moore home run with a line drive home run to start the bottom of the fifth inning. The home run cut the 49er lead to one at 4-3, but that was as close as the Cougars would get.

Houston will close out the regular season on the road this weekend with a three-game series against the Saint Louis Billikens. The teams will play a doubleheader Saturday starting at 1 p.m. and will finish with a single game on Sunday at noon.
