Smaller clubs offer better bills

Unicorns' tickets might disappear fast

By Blake Whitaker
The Daily Cougar

Live music in the summertime doesnit have to be associated with lawn seats, overpriced band merchandise and long bathroom lines -- there are plenty of worthy options this weekend for patrons of smaller clubs.

Canadian pop weirdos the Unicorns will be stopping by Walteris on Washington, 4215 Washington Ave., on Saturday. Outstanding New Yorkers the Fiery Furnaces are also on the bill, and odds are that, musically speaking, theyill give the top performance of the evening. The brother-sister duo may not provide the spectacle the Unicorns have been known to bring to the stage, but their unpretentious, rough-around-the-edges rock (donit dare use the "g" word) wonit disappoint. Be forewarned: More likely than not, thereill be quite a few fans eager to get into this show, as the Unicornsi last attempt at coming to town was upset by passport troubles. When will people start listening to Lennon, and just, you know, stop judging people based on things like borders? Also, stop wearing bras. Thanks.

Chris Carraba will lead Dashboard Confessional at the Honda Civic Tour on Saturday at Reliant Arena and take rock ini roll one step closer to its death bed.

Across the street at Mary Janeis Fat Cat, 4216 Washington Ave., Duvall (featuring ex-members of the Smoking Popes) and locals Panic in Detroit will play a $5 show. Members of Fugazi are currently filing suit against Duvall for stealing their ethics.

On Saturday, Dashboard Confessional, Thrice, and the Get up Kids will play the Reliant Arena as part of the Honda-sponsored Civic Tour. Itis true what your parents told you about "hate" not being a very nice word, but occasionally something like an emo concert featuring a customized Civic autographed by Dashboard Confessional comes along and refuses to allow any other kind of response. Rock ini roll was dying from the moment it was conceived. All this tour does is hammer a few more nails into its coffin. But, hey, whatever floats you boat.

If youire too scared of Johnny Law and Timmy Brain Damage to do drugs, stop by Mary Janeis on Sunday to see Japanese experimental rockers Acid Mothers Temple, and have your mind blown relatively safely and legally. A word of warning, though -- this show isnit going to be a love-in. Expect more Boredoms-style weirdness than Grateful Dead vibe; this is Japan weire talking about.
