UH facility will help to cut diesel emissions Project targets city's diesel vehicle fleet Cougar News Services Houston Mayor Bill White on Monday helped officially open UH's Diesel Vehicle Research and Training Facility, which will test technologies designed to reduce emissions from the city's fleet of 2,800 diesel vehicles. The facility is part of a five-year project headed by the Department of Chemical Engineering to conduct diesel testing and data analysis, emissions research and technology development. The work will cost nearly $5 million, $3.8 million of which will be provided by the city. The project will help bring the Houston area into compliance with Environmental Protection Agency ozone standards. Nitrogen oxide, an emission from diesel-powered vehicles, reacts with the atmosphere to form ozone, a component of smog. Faculty members and students from the department
will participate in the research to systematically evaluate the effectiveness
of technologies in the reduction of nitrogen oxides and particulates in
diesel emissions.
