High temps lead to heat warnings Cougar News Staff It's not the humidity -- it's the heat. As temperatures in Houston climb, officials are warning residents to take precautions to avoid conditions like heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Today's high is expected to reach 98 degrees with a heat index of more than 100 degrees. Signs of heat-related ailments include fatigue, shortness of breath, headaches, cramps, confusion and excessive perspiration. Heat-related illnesses can lead to organ damage, coma and death. To avoid overheating, the University of Michigan
Health System recommends wearing loose, lightweight clothing, limiting
outdoor activity in the heat of the day, drinking plenty of water and avoiding
alcohol.
