Donations help local schoolchildren By Anne Marie Nguyen
Underprivileged elementary school students in the Houston area will have one less thing to think about as the new school year nears, thanks to a project coordinated in part by the Houston Alumni Organization. HAO, the Houston Coca-Cola Bottling Co. and H-E-B are sponsoring the 14th annual Operation School Supplies. The project will benefit 181 schools in 24 districts by collecting donated school supplies and organizing sponsorships for schools and school districts. Last year, OSS collected more than $135,000 in school supplies. "With each year, we see more and more students in need of school supplies, so we are proud that this public service project is helping so many students," Jeff Fuller, the OSS chairman for the past four years, said. Supplies may be donated at the Houston Zoo beginning at 8 a.m. July 31; at Minute Maid Park prior to the Astros game Aug. 3; or at H-E-B, 2660 Fountain View at Westheimer, from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 6. OSS will receive a portion of the price of every Coca-Cola product purchased at local H-E-B stores through Aug. 8. Organizers are also seeking volunteers for the Sort
& Box Day on Aug. 14 at the Athletic/Alumni Center. Volunteers may
register online at www.houstonalumni.com.
