OPINION
Martha Stewart got
off easy
Martha Stewart was sentenced to only
five months in jail despite her actions with her ImClone stocks. Ever the
celebrity and conscious of her public image, Stewart is said to have smiled
bravely into the camera and promised that she would be back. She is also
expected to appeal the sentence, even though it has the bare minimum for
her crime.
Trial distracting, Orwellian
In the 1940s, a fantastic novel presented
a disturbing view of the post-modern world. In George Orwell's 1984,
everyone owns a telescreen constantly turned on in their living rooms,
workplace lounges and schools. Several times a day, the telescreen airs
Two Minutes Hate, a program designed to provide the people with
news that violently upsets them, and surely enough the people react appropriately.
Loving USA means free criticism
There is a standard refrain that goes,
"Love it or leave it!" In most contexts, "it" refers to the United States,
which either must be loved or left by an individual who is making a criticism,
typically about government or corporate executives in this country.
