National recognition again for QB Kolb observed by second award group Cougar Sports Services The quarterback who wowed Cougar fans with a record 3,131 passing yards and 25 touchdowns has another admirer: The Maxwell Football Club. The organization that last year named Ole Miss quarterback Eli Manning the most outstanding player of the year has Kolb on its Maxwell Award watch list. About 40 players made the list, mostly composed of upperclassmen.
Last season Kolb ran for more than 300 yards and scored seven touchdowns, shattering all previous UH freshman quarterback records. On June 13, he was placed on the watch list for the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award, which is regarded as second only to the Heisman trophy in prestige in the college football world. Kolb, the Cougars' first true freshman quarterback, completed more than 60 percent of his passes and threw only six interceptions. Kolb also plowed the turf for 346 yards rushing and seven touchdowns. That effort has garnered him a slew of awards and honors from media outlets and professional organizations. Against the Texas Christian Horned Frogs, Kolb became the fourth quarterback in NCAA Division I-A history to pass for more than 400 yards and rush for more than 100 in a single game. In addition to being named Conference USA's Offensive Player of the Week on two occasions, Kolb was also a Third-Team All-Conference USA selection. Collegefootballnews.com named him its 2003 Freshman of the Year. Also on the Maxwell watch list is the Hawaii Warriors'
Timmy Chang, Kolb's Hawaii bowl rival who out-passed him by more than a
hundred yards and three touchdowns last year on Christmas Day.
