Vote on smoking bill is postponed By Portia-Elaine Gant
An anti-smoking bill being developed by the Residence Halls Association has been tabled because of low attendance at an RHA general assembly last week. RHA President Russell Payne decided to postpone a vote on the bill, which would work in conjunction with a Student Government Association measure to address smoking around the entrances to campus buildings. The RHA bill proposes prohibiting smoking within 25 feet of the entrances to Bates, Law, Settegast and Taub halls and the main entrance to the Moody Towers. Smoking would also be banned in various areas throughout Cougar Place under the proposal. "I wanted to see a vote on the smoking ordinance, but I'm not going to let a handful of people decide major legislation for more than 2,500 residents," Payne said. "I would prefer that we have a larger body of residents involved." Payne said the bill will be brought before the general assembly again Tuesday. The meeting will take place at 8 p.m. in the Cougar Place lobby. In other news, RHA Vice President of Special Events
Katherine Mayse resigned her position in order to serve as a resident assistant
during the coming academic year. The remaining members of the executive
board appointed Ashley Glaw, who served on the Oberholtzer-Law Hall Council
for 2003-04, to the vacant position.
