Through fundamentals and hard work,
UH golfing shows potential

Sports commentary

Ken Stocks

After a rough season last year, the Cougar golf team and head coach Vince Jarrett are poised to climb back to the top of the collegiate rankings once again.

Both Jarrett and the University of Houston have proud records of producing winning golf programs and they will be teaming up to bring success back to UH.

UH can attract some of the best golfers from around the world and last season featured sophomore Pablo Acuna of Guatemala and junior Daniel Angenscheidt of Uruguay, both set to return for the 2004-05 season.

The Cougars are also looking forward to the return of co-captain and junior business major Zach Mowbray, who had a very respectable 73.5 scoring average and tied for seventh place in the 2004 Border Olympics in Laredo.

"We have an exciting mixture of new and returning players and I see a real chance for improvement on this team," Jarrett said.

Jarrett is a hands-on coach with years of experience as a teaching professional, and those skills will help foster these young players' talent.

"We will concentrate on the fundamentals and I look forward to working closely with all my players," he said.

The training regimen might surprise a lot of students, as the golf team can be seen working out in the weight room two or three times a week during the school year as well as walking daily rounds on the area's top golf courses.

All this physical work doesn't come before the team's schoolwork -- Jarrett's degree is in education and he has coached Academic All-Americans.

"I believe in rewarding hard workers and all of the UH players will compete in an intra-squad match before each tournament with the lowest scorers receiving the opportunity to represent their team," Jarrett said.

Jarrett is a firm believer in teamwork and he will put a group of fine young men on the course that will represent the University proudly. And with hard work and a little luck, maybe one of your classmates will become the next Fred Couples.
