Most quality shows on hiatus this week Briefs, Distillers, DRI to perform By Jason Gagnon
New wave punkers The Briefs are set to play a crazy show at Mary Jane's Fat Cat's on Friday night. Photo courtesy of Interscope Records It's a slow weekend for quality live music, which is just as well considering that you'll probably be secluded in some tiny room cramming for finals. However, there are a few great shows you shouldn't miss out on. Friday New-wave punkers The Briefs head to town at Fat Cat's, 4216 Washington Ave. Unfortunately, they unfortunately had to cancel their last gig, but that shouldn't happen this time. The Briefs perform one of the most enjoyable shows around, and you can't go wrong with a group that sings about personal sexually transmitted disease experiences ("New Case"). The Dishes and the Ends open up the show. At The Continental Club, 3700 Main St., you can have your faith restored in country music by witnessing the amazing Sean Reefer and the Resin Valley Boys. Fitzgerald's, 2706 White Oak Drive, hosts local vatos-rudos Los Skarnales along with Lucky South. A band that seemed to disappear, Jackopierce, will be at McGonigel's Mucky Duck, 2425 Norfolk St. In the mood for blues? Check out Pete Mayes at The Big Easy, 5731 Kirby Drive, or the Mighty Orq at The Hideaway, 3122 Dunvale Road. To get some Christmas tunes early, the Verizon Wireless Theater, 520 Texas Ave., brings you a Peter White Christmas. Saturday Texas thrash legends D.R.I. will destroy Fitzgerald's along with Pimpadelic. Moses Guest performs at the Last Concert Cafe, 1403 Nance St. Country fans should go to the Firehouse Saloon and Eatery, 5930 Southwest Freeway, to see Cooder Graw. The former Mrs. Tim Armstrong will play with her band The Distillers at the Engine Room, 1515 Pease Ave. Be sure to get there early for that, because the Explosion open up the show. Low Down Brown will boogie crowds at The Big Easy, while The Mavericks and Los Lonely Boys shake things up at Numbers, 300 Westheimer Road. Sunday Catch local rockers The Vexers, The Kants and Expatriates at Walter's on Washington, 4215 Washington Ave. Across the street at Fat Cat's, hardcore legends Integrity will play along with locals Will to Live and Die Young. This is going to be Will To Live's video shoot, so if you like seeing your face on television, show up and dance hard. For fans of pop-punk, the Engine Room features Allister and Fall Out Boy. Monday Things continue to slow down, but the night offers the city some great
live acts. Always funny, never politically correct, Kinky Friedman will
perform at the Mucky Duck. For a great bluegrass and roots music experience,
go to Helios, 411 Westheimer Road, and see The Medicine Show. The El Orbits
play at the Continental. If you're still in the mood for heavy music after
Integrity, go back to Fat Cat's for the brutality of Bury Your Dead.
