From the editor

When I walked into The Daily Cougar three years ago, I just wanted to write. A section editor gave me a chance, and there I went.

Thatis what you get when you walk into the Cougar. You get a chance -- a chance to write, edit, lay out, meet fine people and, if youire cut out for it, lead a staff for a semester.

I think I had it easy considering the current state of the University. This staff was fortunate to cover everything from UH President and Chancellor Jay Gogueis first days in office to Cougar football head coach Art Brilesi mission to resuscitate a program to the always important letters to the editor.

But I canit imagine how this semester would have gone without the help of my section editors. Thereis Keenan Singleton, who knows nothing about thinking inside the box (read his junk and youill know what Iim talking about); Bridget Brown, the queen of entertainment; Ray Hafner, a guy who loves The New York Times more than his spare time; Lisa Street, who adds that New Orleans spice to any room she enters; and Manuel Rearte, who makes Argentina proud every time he snaps a picture.

Then thereis Matt Dulin, the next editor in chief and a guy who lives for the next paper.

I truly donit know how to thank the guy for the hours and heart heis poured into the Cougar this semester. Itis like this: I gave him the DVD version of Goodfellas
as a Christmas present, but he deserves the Stanley Kubrick collection instead. Even Iim excited to see what Dulin has in store for the Cougar next semester. Trust me when I say that the Play Pen was just the beginning.

I hope the staff writers, copy editors, photographers and cartoonists, like newcomer Jason Poland and his "Robbie and Bobby," who contributed to the paper this semester find time and have the desire to help Dulin push this paper a couple of months from now.

Oh, and to Ed De La Garza: Stay cool, homes.

So, there you go. My staff gave me a chance, and I did my best.

Now, I just want to write.
