Back to school The weather is brisk, the level of activity around campus is increasing and memories of the holidays are fading fast. That can mean only one thing -- it's time for the spring semester to begin. Daily Cougar staff members have been working hard to prepare this special two-section edition of the paper. The News section includes stories about construction and the effect of the bowl game on the Athletics Department's finances; Arts and Entertainment has reviews of some of the latest in music and film. In the second section, the Sports staff takes a look at the Hawaii Bowl and previews a few spring sports. There are also a few design changes to the paper we hope readers will like, including listing contact information for each section editor at the beginning of each section. We enjoy feedback just as much as we enjoy running it as a letter to the editor or guest column. As you can read on today's front page, Calhoun Road and most of Entrance 1 are torn up, so driving around the area will not be easy for some time. The new library addition is nearing completion. As the winter holidays passed, library workers moved the computers from their former location into the first floor of the new addition. The Honors College, which will inhabit the second floor of the addition, is planning to move to its new home in March. Everything should be up and running by the end of the semester. It's also a great time to check out UH athletic programs. While many students were away, the women's basketball team stormed out to a 14-2 record and became nationally ranked. The men's team is hovering around the .500 mark, an improvement over last year's season. And that's not counting the other spring sports, such as baseball, fresh off its appearance in the 2003 Super Regionals, anever- improving softball team and the outdoor track and field season. Welcome back. We wish all of you a happy and successful semester. Send comments to dccampus@mail.uh.edu |
