Some heroes missed the list "Father of Collegiate Golf" among Cougar contributions to sporting world Cougar Sports Staff Editor's note: Dozens of Houston's sports heroes were selected to
receive honors during a special ceremony Monday night. After perusing the
list of legends, we found there were a few UH names that were left off
the list.
The only UH sports legends played men's basketball, football, golf and track — or at least the official sports legends. But Cougar fans know better. UH has exceptional athletes in every sport. Here are a few names that won't get any honors during Super Bowl week, but who are Cougar sports legends in their own right. Dave Williams Williams, who died in Dec. 1998, led the Cougars to 16 national championships during his 35-year tenure as the head coach of the UH golf program. Williams is known as the "Father of Collegiate Golf" and tutored numerous PGA stars, including Fred Couples and Steve Elkington. Tom Tellez Instead of taking a position with Tom Landry as the Dallas Cowboys' strength coach, Tellez shunned joining a dynasty in Dallas to begin his own in Houston. Tellez coached at the University from 1977 to 1998 and helped make Carl Lewis and Leroy Burrell the world's fastest men. Currently serves as a volunteer track coach for the Cougars. Chandi Jones The only current Cougar on the list, Jones is a two-time Conference USA Player of the Year. Always the complete player, Jones has led the Lady Cougars to their first top 25 ranking (No. 25) since the 1992 season, while leading the team offensively and defensively. Leading scorer in UH history. Yulia Pakhalina A five-time national diving champion. Pakhalina made a splash at UH, leading the swimming and diving program back to prominence. Three-time C-USA Diver of the Year. Send comments to dcsports@mail.uh.edu |
