Pair of UH athletes earn awards Routt C-USA Athlete of the Week; Hawkins scholar-athlete winner Cougar Sports Staff UH junior sprinter Stanford Routt set NCAA provisional marks for the men's 60-meter and 200-meter races at the Leonard Hilton Memorial on Saturday. The two wins helped him to be named Conference USA Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending Sunday. Routt, an All American in 2003, scored a time of 6.67 seconds in the finals of the men's 60 -- not only a provisional mark but also a meet record and a personal best. Routt sprinted his previous career best (6.70 seconds) at the tournament in January 2003. His finish time was 21.13 seconds for the 200. This was just behind his career best, 20.97 seconds, which he set last year. Routt was an NCAA qualifier in the 60 and 200 for the 2003 indoor season, winning fourth and seventh places. This wasn't the first time Routt has received the C-USA Athlete of the Week award. He earned the honors during the 2003 outdoor track season after a second-place finish in the 200 at the Texas Invitational. He also helped Houston's 4-by-100 meter relay win a C-USA Championship and qualify for the NCAA Tournament with a second place finish at the Midwest Regional in the same season. Soccer Scholar It seems junior soccer midfielder Nikki Hawkins has been kicking around the books as much as the 11 assists and six goals she helped garner for the Cougars during the 2003 season. Hawkins, who led the Cougars in every offensive category last season, was named to the 2003 NSCAA Scholar-Athlete All-South Region Second Team by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Hawkins is the first Cougar to receive the honor since the program began in 1998. She was ranked as the No. 1 player on the squad last season by head coach Bill Solberg in recognition for her solid work ethic and consistency. Solberg said Hawkins was the most deserving player on the squad. She was a steady contributor to the Cougars, starting in all of Houston's 19 matches. She tied with teammate Kelly Golden with two game-winning goals in all matches. In C-USA matches, she led the team with six points and three goals, earning her a spot on the First Team All-Conference USA in 2003. Hawkins earned 13 points during her 2002 season and 2002 Second Team All-Conference USA honors. Her 2002 totals moved her into Houston's all-time top 10 in points, goals and game-winning goals. Hawkins is among the top 10 in UH history for all eight offensive categories. For a complete listing of the 2003 NSCAA Scholar-Athlete All-America Teams, visit www.nscaa.com.
