Big game weekend full of concerts

Three days of shows include options even for football apathetic

By Bridget Brown
The Daily Cougar

It's going to be hard to escape the Super Bowl hype this weekend, so why not join in the fun? Space City clubs are brimming this weekend with plenty of great live shows to impress our out of town guests, so it should be easy to find something for everyone.

Friday

At Fitzgerald's on 2706 White Oak Blvd., get happy upstairs with the great ska band The Toasters, or vent your frustrations over all of the corporate Super Bowl hype with punk band Fear.

Check out some Texas-sized rock with The Burden Brothers, Goneblind, Poor Dumb Bastards and My Own I at the Engine Room, 1515 Pease St., for just $10. The Burden Brothers will also play at downtown's Super Bash as well, but tickets for that show are $25, and if it's anything like Wednesday night the patrons will be pushy and the Coors Light will be overpriced.

Crudefall, Last Minute Fix, Brutally Normal and Quaranteens will be at Fat Cat's, 4216 Washington Ave., and The Drunks will perform over at Rudyards, 2010 Waugh.

If you're in the mood for some blues, then head down to Shakespeare Pub, 14129 Memorial Dr., to see Benny Brasket Blues Band.

Matt Davis and Stone Coyotes will play at Sidecar Pub, 11202 Huffmeister, and Dan Electro's Guitar Bar, 1031 24th St., has David Brake & That Damn Band.

If you feel like staying on campus and you've got $50 to spare then go see Outkast's Big Boi at the Cullen Performance Hall.

Saturday

If you aren't going to the Super Bash to see bands like Blue October, Ingram Hill, Trick Pony, Eve 6, Sammy Hagar and Paris Green then take it easy at the Big Easy for blues man Alan Haynes.

The Asylum Street Spankers, always a good time, will play a very eclectic and very acoustic set at Rudyard's, 2010 Waugh St. Another Jazz act, The Dave Marcellin Quartet, will also perform at Cezanne, 4100 Montrose Blvd.

If you really want a treat and you've never seen this truly talented Austin native before, Carolyn Wonderland will perform her cool blues at Dan Electro's Guitar Bar, 1031 24th St.

Spice up your weekend with Flamenco Sol at River Cafe, 3615 Montrose Blvd..

Flametrick Subs, Luxurious Panthers and Zombilly will play at Walter's on Washington, 4215 Washington Ave., and gearing up for its Sunday performance at Super Bash, Pushmonkey will play an acoustic set at Sidecar Pub, 11202 Huffmeister Dr.

If you want to get out of the chaos this week drive down to Galveston to see the Oak Ridge Boys at the Grand 1894 Opera House, 2020 Postoffice Dr.

There's a large show with Jibe, Faceplant, Cadillac Voodoo Choir, Days From Waking and Carcen at The Engine Room, 1515 Pease St.

Sunday

It's game day so Super Bash is probably the place to be -- if you can stand the crowd. Bo Jones, Jamie Talbert, Will Hoge, Better Than Ezra and Vallejo will play. Other than that there's really not much going on -- just a whole lot of football and traffic.
