UHV names interim president Cougar News Services Don N. Smith, provost at UH-Victoria, has been named interim president of the university. Smith's term will begin Sunday but will be officially approved by the UH System Board of Regents on Feb. 19. Karen Haynes, former UHV president, will take the presidency of California State University San Marcos on Monday. A search committee is being formed to locate a permanent president for UHV, which enrolls about 2,400 students. "Since the selection process for a new president needs to be thorough, deliberate and exhaustive, we are fortunate to have someone of (Smith's) caliber to keep this ship moving in the right direction," UH System Chancellor Jay Gogue said in a release. Smith has been at UHV since 1987, when he became dean of academic affairs.
In 1993, he left for the State University of West Georgia, where he was
vice president for academic affairs and dean of faculties. He returned
to UHV in 1995 and has served as interim president there twice before,
in 1989 and 1991-92.
