Weekend releases
offer little in quality
The 1980s are truly back. Male actors and rock stars
alike are cutting their hair like the kids from Jaws 2, tight men's jeans
are once again cutting off circulation all over America, and a breakdancing
movie is the No.1 movie in the country.
Bash doesn't live up to hype
Ridiculously expensive alcohol and food and mediocre
entertainment ? this is why some music fans are weary of attending huge
corporate sponsored events. Unfortunately, downtown's "average Joe" Super
Bowl event, Super Bash didn't break the stigma. What was promised was 50
bands and 50 bars; what was delivered was a huge overpriced, five-day flop.
Sex workers speak against injustice
The subject of prostitution is one with which the average
American probably lacks close experience. Even patrons of sex workers may
not have a clear idea of the complex attitudes of the men and women involved
in the industry.
Toasters shake off ska's early
demise
Ska was introduced into the American popular music scene
in the mid-1970s and continued to draw attention for the next 20 years.
In the late 1990s, in what some believe to be an ill-fated attempt to keep
the sound alive, bands infused the pop reggae style with punk and pop rock
sounds.
