S&D falls to Arkansas By Stuart H. Clements
The Houston swimming and diving team fell to 9-8 on the season Saturday after a hard-fought battle against the Arkansas Lady Razorbacks as a Southeastern Conference team again proved to be a roadblock for the Cougars. After the painful 184-115 defeat, Houston dropped to 0-2 against SEC teams. The Cougars broke out of tradition during the weekend. For a team that is perennially dependent upon its divers, the swimmers carried the divers against Arkansas. Collectively Houston won six first-place finishes, but only one was in a diving event. Freshman Szintia Szanto added three more blue ribbons to her showcase this season. The Budapest, Hungary, native garnered the top spot in the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing in one minute, 6.36 seconds. In addition, Szanto won the 200-yard backstroke in two minutes 20.96 seconds and the 100-yard butterfly at 57.70 seconds. Senior co-captain Lucile Turpin shined in the 200-yard butterfly and the 400-yard individual medley. Turpin, a native of Reunion Island, won both events with times of two minutes 9.41 seconds and four minutes 36.68 seconds, respectively. Freshman diver Anna Kiess led the Cougar dive squad with a first place finish in the platform event. The Berlin native scored 416.475 points, the highest score of the meet and the only one to breech the 400 barrier. Houston will dive into the tank against Southern Methodist at 7 p.m. Friday at the Campus Recreations and Wellness Center Natatorium. Send comments to dcsports@mail.uh.edu |
