New deli offers
low prices on good food
Brown Bag Deli, the new sandwich shop from the owners
of the popular Barnaby's chain of local cafes, has gained quite a following
in the six months it's been in business for serving up fresh fare in a
low-key setting. Residents of nearby areas flock to this spot for a quick
lunch consisting almost exclusively of cold deli-style sandwiches and traditional
lunchtime sides. Essentially, it's fast food service is swift and your
order is ready within two minutes. But you will find no greasy hamburgers
or fries here, just the aforementioned sandwich and maybe a vegetarian
burger.
Like Magic
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart turned over in his grave on Friday
evening. Twice. But it was in the best of ways, because Houston Grand Opera's
production of his famous fairy tale The Magic Flute may be the freshest,
most inventive handling of the piece in years.
Hip-hop misrepresented at summit
Hip-hop's elite gathered Saturday afternoon for the annual
Hip-Hop Summit held at Texas Southern University to discuss the status
of the hip-hop culture and its future and the importance of voting and
voter registration among youth.
Singer's 'Revolution' begins
When Carolyn Wonderland was eight years old her mother
taught her an important lesson -- how to play three guitar chords, and
to never, ever touch her Martin guitar with her dirty fingers. She was
never allowed to use a pick on the expensive, wooden instrument -- a great
feat for an eight-year-old's small hands. This began the mastery of her
unique finger-picking style, and a long career with a great deal of heart
and talent, but not enough recognition.
