UH 2-0 in the spring

Cougar Sports Services

The Cougars weren't facing the toughest competition, but they should be applauded for getting the job done.

The UH tennis team got off to a hot start to the 2004 portion of this season, defeating McNeese State 5-2 on Saturday and shutting out Lamar 7-0 on Sunday.

Sophomore Kami Miller was perfect for her two singles matches this weekend. She won 6-4, 7-5 Saturday and 6-1, 6-2 Sunday.

Against the Cardinals on Sunday, the Cougars took all three doubles matches to begin the competition. The team of junior Biljana Dimovska and sophomore Miranda Foley won its match 8-3, junior Hanaa Rhazi and senior Karine Urbin won 8-6, and the sophomore tandem of Kami Miller and Yolandi Terblanche took its match 8-1.

The team was just as dominant in singles, registering straight-set victories in all five matches. Dimovska defeated Elena Korbout 6-0, 6-1, Foley defeated Hayley Bakker 6-1, 6-4 and Rahzi won her singles match 6-4, 6-3 over Andrea Martinez.

Junior Diana Martin won her singles match 6-1, 6-1 over Kendall Gibbs, Miller ousted Nicole Weber 6-1, 6-2 and sophomore Sandy Blajer shut out Beatriz DeRegil 6-0, 6-0.

Though the team didn't claim victory in every match Saturday, it was no less impressive against McNeese State. The Cougars won all three doubles matches and four of their six singles matches against the Cowgirls.

UH got wins from Dimovska (6-4, 6-3), Foley (6-1, 6-0), Terblanche (6-3, 6-1) and Miller (6-4, 7-5). Both Rahzi and Urbin lost their matches.

The Cougars return home to face Texas State at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the John E. Hoff Varsity Tennis Courts.
