UH still perfect in '04 By Barrett Goldsmith
The Cougars are rolling along. UH tennis is now 3-0 after defeating Texas State 5-1 on Wednesday at the Metropolitan Club in Houston. "I feel great about the way we played today," head coach Jen Hyde said. "We played excellent tennis and we cut down on some of the mistakes we've been making." The competition was scheduled for the John E. Hoff Varsity Tennis Courts on campus, but weather conditions forced the competition indoors to the Metropolitan. Junior Biljana Dimovska defeated Melanie Hall 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 1 match. Sophomore Miranda Foley also won in straight sets, beating Leja Sirola 6-1, 6-3. Sophomore Yolandi Terblanche shut out Tina Klemenc 6-0, 6-0. Sophomore Kami Miller outdid Gillian Dersken 6-2, 6-0, and junior Diana Martin defeated Katie Felder 6-2, 6-1. The only UH loss came on a near-miss by junior Hanaa Rhazi, who lost in three sets to Margaret Potyrala, 6-4, 4-6, 10-4. "I thought the team was much more focused than we've been so far this season," Hyde said. "We played with a lot of energy and enthusiasm, but we were focused and patient on points, which is something I've been stressing." The road will get tougher for Houston, beginning Friday against Texas-Arlington. The match will be the team's fourth in eight days, and will be followed by a match Sunday against Alabama-Birmingham. "It was great to have these first few matches to start getting into our rhythm and shaking off some nerves," Hyde said. "Now we have to play against some tough opponents, some opponents that are nationally ranked." Send comments to dcsports@mail.uh.edu |
