Theaters dump true love New movies can't compete with the violent emotions of old films by Geronimo Rodriguez
We need more bleeding hearts on Valentine's Day and the theater isn't helping. The movies are the last place a couple wants to visit on the day all about love. Whether they've just started to get a feel of one another's tonsils or are about to swap rings, lovebirds would rather be tossing around in a bed of rose petals. The truth is, a guy taking his woman to watch a flick on Valentine's Day isn't a good idea, especially considering the rotten candy-wrapped reels offered this weekend.
50 First Dates isn't the best looking option for a romantic evening; better movies are out on video. Photo courtesy of Columbia Pictures Like 50 First Dates, starring Adam Sandler and Rob Schneider, who might be the only comedic actor to ever get his butt waxed to get in character. Sandler is a funny guy, but this genre needs a facelift -- not just a nip and tuck, but more of a Michael Jackson-style slice and dice -- and 50 First Dates seems pretty ugly. On second thought, the problem might not be going to the movies but more about the movies offered. Where are the real love stories? I'm talking about The Badlands, True Romance and even Bonnie and Clyde. Don't even think about adding Notting Hill or Shakespeare in Love to this list. In this case, more bloodshed equals more love. As bullets flood the air, these couples grip each other's hands, lay down a couple of smooches and sashay down a blood-worn aisle. Talk about true love. Although the characters in these classics killed to be together, today's filmmakers like to keep their characters running back and forth to one another. That's no way to show your love. After all, even though she pushed her shady lover to his doom, Bonnie would've never forgotten about Clyde. So couples might want to rent one of these movies, snuggle up and watch the true meaning of love unfold before their eyes. Send comments to dcshobiz@mail.uh.edu |
