chooses his own direction
Why should you, Cougar youth,
forgo that newest Hollywood discharge and find your way to the Wortham?
Why shouldn't you dig into your pockets to watch some no-talent hack on
the silver screen fumble his way through two hours of half-dead dialogue,
even if he does wear trucker hats at jaunty angles?
All
styles mingle in bar's cult status
Some places try hard to
achieve a cult
status that takes years to build up. The Velvet Melvin,
at 3303 Richmond Ave., is one of those places that has it, that certain
unpretentious cool where everyone can feel welcome.
Two
punk sounds please young audience
A college student, especially
one who had a test the next morning, might not have been looking forward
to Tuesday night's show at the 610 Arena, but Simple Plan's appearance
was the only thing happening in months for a pair of 16-year-old Allisons
from Katy Taylor High School.
Influential
punks play small crowd
Hands Up Houston brought
a great punk rock show to Mary Jane's on Tuesday that was poorly attended.
When insignificant groups like the Casualties and the Exploited come around;
the mohawk mafia overruns the club no matter what the night. But, the Subhumans,
arguably one of punk's most important bands, drew a modest turnout that
should have been a sellout.
Drawing
on skin, artist finds his way
Matt "Wojo" Wojociechowski
always wanted to draw. He came to UH seeking an art degree, but dropped
out in the early 1990s with only 12 hours left to finish. It's not that
he wasn't motivated or that he was lazy. He was simply doing fine without
it.
