Rock, Mardi Gras bring crowds The High Strung, Hollywood High top lists at smaller clubs By Bridget Brown
If you don't like sleazy, fabricated rock or plastic beads then you're in for a boring weekend. Although there are a couple of other noteworthy shows, Kid Rock and Mardi Gras are the highlights. Do yourself a favor and stay home and study. Friday Check out folksters Annie Lin, Kristie Rae and Sail on Silvergirl playing at Last Concert Cafe, 1403 Nance Road, or trade the folk for the funk and head over to Numbers, 300 Westheimer Road, to see instrumental jam-band Galactic. The High Strung, The Everyothers and The Calsonics will play at Fat Cat's, 4216 Washington Ave. The Detroit Free Press and The Washington Post both raved about The High Strung's cheeky humor and harmonious melodies -- they might be worth a shot. Fronted by the 18-year-old Glitter Rose, Hollywood High has been likened to a mix of Guns N' Roses and Blondie. They will play at The Engine Room, 1515 Pease St., with some of the city's hottest local bands, The Handsomes, White Noise Transistor and Drexl. Mae and Copeland will play upstairs at Fitzgerald's, 2706 White Oak Road. Southern Backtones and Down & Dirties will entertain the downstairs crowd. If you haven't seen them 100 times already, Vallejo and Pilot Radio will play at Sidecar Pub, 11202 Huffmeister Road. Saturday Kid Rock, will play at the Toyota Center. Not much to say about this -- you know who he is, and you probably already know if you're going. Flame Trick Subs, Zombilly, and The Irish Brothers will play the Continental Club, 3700 Main St. Brave Combo, Mark Halata and Texavia take the helm over at Fitzgerald's while Chainsaw Sex Vikings, Keg Charge, Reason of Insanity Kruller and Walking Terror will play at Fat Cat's. The Zombies will play at The Engine Room. Sunday Bellydance Superstars and The Desert Roses will perform at The Engine Room. Bluesman Joe Bonamassa will play at the Rhythm Room, 1815 Washington Ave. If you just can't wait until the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo to get your dose of country music, see Loretta Lynn featuring the Lynns at the Arena Theatre, 7326 Southwest Freeway.
