Lack of polish dooms UH Cougars shut out by Alabama, lose by one vs. Southern Methodist Cougar Sports Services While fans enjoyed the party-like atmosphere of Friday's match against Alabama, the Cougars weren't having any fun. The UH tennis team was shut out 7-0 by
the Lady Crimson Tide, but came out with a vengeance Sunday, narrowly falling
to Southern Methodist 4-3.
Sophomore Miranda Foley and the Cougars suffered heartbreaking losses to Alabama on Friday and Southern Methodist on Sunday. Nathan Lindstrom/The Daily Cougar Against the Lady Mustangs, the Cougars took all but one match to three sets, with the only two-set match coming off a withdrawal by SMU's Nadia Vaughan, who conceded the match to junior Diana Martin. Sophomore Miranda Foley defeated Jenny Langer 3-6, 7-6, 7-6 for UH, and fellow sophomore Kami Miller beat Brooke Rambally 4-6, 6-0, 7-5. Foley and Junior Biljana Dimovska fell 8-1 to Kit Carson and Svetlana Kouzmenko. Langer and Allison Leuszler defeated Martin and senior Karine Urbine 8-6. Vaughan and Lynsie Jones bested Miller and sophomore Yolandi Terblanche 8-6. The Cougars looked rusty against Alabama on Friday after a two-week hiatus, coming out flat and out of sync. Head coach Jennifer Hyde knew the inactivity would be a problem, but Houston did not play to its capability. Houston did not win a match, though Terblanche extended Nathalie Kopelle to three sets.
