With wins, UH snags share of C-USA crown

Lady Coogs victors over DePaul, Marquette

By Chrisitan Schmidt
The Daily Cougar

If Friday's win over No. 12 DePaul was dinner, then Sunday's victory against Marquette was a nice dessert for the Lady Cougars.

Houston (23-3 overall, 12-1 Conference USA) took sole possession of first place in Conference USA with an 84-75 win over DePaul (22-4, 10-3) and a 77-64 victory over Marquette (18-5, 8-5) on Sunday. The Lady Cougars, ranked No. 21 in last week's Associated Press poll, should jump up several spots today.

Junior forward Sancho Lyttle dominated DePual on Friday, scoring a career-high 30 points and tying her career high in rebounds (15). She followed that with 21 points and 10 rebounds against Marquette on Sunday.

"We have a share of the conference title, the way I see it," UH head coach Joe Curl said. "The only thing I want to say that's selfish this whole year is we don't want to share that with anybody."

Against Marquette, Houston never trailed, going out to a 17-10 lead with 12 minutes left in the first half and cruising to a 45-28 halftime lead on the strength of 14 points from senior guard Chandi Jones.

The Lady Cougars made the lead as large as 29 points midway through the second half and held on for the win. Marquette never got closer than 12 points down in the second half.

Houston beat No. 12 DePaul on Friday in a game the Lady Cougars led for all of the second half. Houston shot 48.5 percent from the field, including opening the game by shooting better than 70 percent in the first 12 minutes.

"As far as I'm concerned, it was as big a win as I've had since I've been here," Curl said. "Because a year ago I got beat by 51 by DePaul. And we weren't that bad, and they weren't that good, but it happened."

Senior guard/forward Nicole Oliver had her best game of the season with 16 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and five steals.

Junior forward Sancho Lyttle came out slow against Marquette, failing to get a point or rebound in the first eight minutes of the game. Then Curl pulled her out of the game.

"He was telling me that Friday I was a monster inside, and I wasn't playing like that when the game began," Lyttle said.

Lyttle came back to finish with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Lyttle was also a "monster" against DePaul, pounding the porous Lady Blue Demon defense for 30 points and 15 rebounds.

"We were just glad (Sancho) didn't dunk on us," Marquette head coach Terry Mitchell said.

Jones scored 26 points against Marquette and 17 against DePaul. She had a season-high six assists against the Lady Blue Demons.
