Life & Arts Knock out! Eastwood tops Scorcese; Foxx leads as Ray for best actor; Swank claims second award for best actress Cougar Life & Arts Staff In a deviation from standard Oscar operating procedure, last night's Academy Awards saw Million Dollar Baby, a film with only seven nominations, win best picture over The Aviator, the most-nominated film with 11. Although Aviator was snubbed for both the best picture and director categories, the film received the most statues of the night, coming out with five to Baby's four. In a very rare occurrence in Oscar history, the best film of the year did not take home the most hardware. While the majority of The Aviator's five wins were in technical categories -- art direction, cinematography, costume design and film editing -- Million Dollar Baby earned the night's more noteworthy awards, including best director (Clint Eastwood), best actress (Hilary Swank) and best supporting actor (Morgan Freeman). This is Clint Eastwood's second time winning best director and best picture; his film Unforgiven won in 1992.

Though the night was obviously a bout between The Aviator and Million Dollar Baby, none of the five films nominated for best picture went home empty-handed: Ray won two awards, while Finding Neverland and Sideways took one each. Eternal Sunshine for the Spotless Mind received best original screenplay and The Incredibles won for best-animated feature.
