News SGA candidates urged to follow rules Pre-election seminar warns against violations of code; absent candidates may be disqualified By Tina Marie Macias
About 50 prospective student lawmakers attended the Student Government Association's candidate seminar Thursday and were constantly warned that inappropriate campaigning behavior will not be tolerated. That includes violating the SGA Election Code breaking University posting rules. "Some of you want a political future," Assistant Dean of Students Heidi Kennedy said. "You don't want to jeopardize your future because of a posting violation." The Election Commission also had candidates or representatives from their parties draw numbers to choose the order in which they will appear on the ballot. The order for presidential candidates is: Ruth Beltran, an independent; Chris Crane, Cougar Finest party; James Cox, Student Life party; David Williams, UH 4 U party; and Heron Re'chard Thomas, Student Voice party. Crane is now an SGA senator from the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Cox is an engineering senator and Williams is the SGA's director of finance. In the vice presidential race, the ballot order will be: Rojelio Mendoza, Student Life; Francisco Zelaya, UH 4 U; and John Miller, Student Voice. Mendoza and Zelaya are currently serving in the SGA Senate as an engineering and a Liberal Arts and Social Sciences senator, respectively. For the student regent position, Omar Espinoza of the Student Life party will be first on the ballot, Mayoor Sharma of Student Voice will be second and Carlos Machado of UH 4 U will be listed third. Sharma is a former business senator and Machado represents the Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture in the SGA Senate. All candidates had to attend the meeting or be disqualified from running for office. Only two Student Voice party members -- William Cross, who is running for architecture senator, and current technology Sen. Karl Hearne -- were in attendance. If candidates who were absent did not request an
excuse in writing within 24 hours after the meeting, they would be disqualified
from the race, election commissioners said. Ballots are finalized Thursday.
