SGA drops absent hopefuls

Three students are out of running; many seats unopposed

By Tina Marie Macias
Senior Staff Writer

The Student Government Association's Election Commission approved 10 excuses from SGA candidates who did not attend the mandatory candidate seminar Thursday.

If candidates did not attend the seminar, they had 24 hours after the meeting to request that the commission excuse their absence. Election Commissioner Michael Allendorf said most of them had prior engagements such as work, or were sick.

Among those who had their absences excused were three students running for executive positions -- Heron Re'chard Thomas for president, John Miller for vice president and Mayoor Sharma for Student Regent. All are members of the Student Voice party.

Three students who did not attend the meeting did not turn in an excuse and have been dropped from the running. They are Marshall Sumrall, Amado Gracia and Jason Smith, who were running for liberal arts and social sciences, at-large and honors Senate seats, respectively.

Allendorf said all five business seats and all three education seats will be unopposed. Two liberal arts and social sciences seats are also unopposed, as is one technology seat and the seats from law and social work.

No one filed to run for the optometry and pharmacy seats.

Allendorf didn't yet have a final list of candidates Monday evening.

"I'm still updating the list, and I have to e-mail those who aren't candidates anymore," he said.

The ballot will be finalized Thursday, and the SGA general election will be held online Tuesday and March 9. Votes may be cast at studentelection.uh.edu 24 hours a day during both election days.
