Sports Cougars toppled by No. 1 Tulane C-USA Tournament run ends in semifinals Cougar Sports Services Though the Cougars made a solid run to reach the semifinals of the 2005 Conference USA Baseball Tournament, the nation's top-ranked team stopped them in their tracks as the Tulane Green Wave defeated the Cougars 10-1 Saturday at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field. Tulane center fielder Nathan Southard was responsible for most of the damage done to the Cougars, as he hit three home runs and finished the day with four RBIs. Southard was also named the Tournament's Most Valuable Player.
Sophomore infielder Dustin Kingsbury was one of the bright spots for UH in the C-USA Tournament, hitting his way onto the All-Tournament team with a home run and five RBIs. Pin Lim/The Daily Cougar
Sophomore pitcher Brad Lincoln (4-7) got the loss for UH, as he gave up nine runs (including four earned) on seven hits in six innings of work. He struck out six batters and contributed to his own cause at the plate, driving in the Cougars' only run with a solo homer. Tulane starter Micah Owings (9-4) picked up the victory by holding the Cougars to one run on six hits while striking out nine in seven innings. Green Wave infielder Brad Emaus tacked on five RBIs, going 3-for-5 with a grand slam. Southard's three blasts came in the first, third and fourth innings, helping Tulane to jump out to a 4-1 lead after four frames. Emaus' grand slam came in the sixth, part of a five-run inning (all five runs were unearned) that broke the game open with Tulane taking a 9-1 lead. The loss dropped the Cougars to 29-30 on the season, their first losing season since they posted the same record in 2001. It is only the third time a Cougar squad has finished under .500 in Rayner Noble's 11-year stint as UH's head coach. The Green Wave (50-9) was declared C-USA co-champions along with Texas Christian. UH sophomore infielder Dustin Kingsbury was named
to the C-USA All-Tournament team following the completion of the tournament.
Kingsbury was 6-16 with a home run and 5 RBIs in the four games the Cougars
played.
