News Alumna honored in FERV grant New scholarship offered to first-year optometry students Cougar News Services To honor a former student, the UH College of Optometry will provide an opportunity for future students. Next fall, the Foundation for Education and Research in Vision will award an incoming UH pharmacy student with the Desiree T. Hopping Presidential Endowed Scholarship, named for a UH alumna and the outgoing president of FERV. FERV, a support organization for the College of Optometry, attempts to improve the community through informing the public about eye care and providing financial incentives for students to study optometry. The scholarship will go to a freshman or first-year professional pharmacy student who exhibits high academic performance, leadership skills and willingness to contribute to the community. It is renewable for all four years if the student adheres to eligibility requirements. Hopping received her doctoral degree in optometry from UH and her bachelor's degree from Rice University. She worked with FERV for 20 years, including 12 years as president. Hopping now practices family and child optometry in Clear Lake. "UH has given me my whole career and expert training
in my profession," Hopping said in a release. "I appreciate and love my
profession because it allows me to help people, especially children."
