Cougars out-swim Incarnate Word

The Cougar swimming and diving squad traveled west to San Antonio to face the University of Incarnate Word where they defeated the Cardinals 73-62 Friday, improving their record to 5-7.

Houston started the day off with a win in the 200-yard medley relay after freshmen Nicole Vaiana and Jenny Hagen and sophomores Kat Lau and Amanda Rutter came in with a time of 1 minute, 54.24 seconds.

Throughout the day, the Cougars commanded by taking first in seven individual events and winning both relays.

Junior Stacey Williams won two of those seven events: the 50-yard freestyle, with a time of 25.61, and the 100-yard freestyle, with a time of 54.51.

Other UH swimmers taking first place were sophomore Alejandra Salazar who had a time of 2:02.34 in the 500-yard freestyle, senior Kristin Bay in the 200-yard individual medley (2:15.74), Lau in the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.13), sophomore Szintia Szanto in the 100-yard backstroke (1:02.58) and Randee Billips in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:11.98).

Williams, Tatjana Banjeglav, Vaiana and Bay finished the dual meet against UIW with a win in the 200-freestyle relay team with a time of 1:40.82.

The Cougars go back on the road Friday when they will face Louisiana State and Rice in Baton Rouge.
