Men's squad takes team title, women's takes third

Cougars take first in individual, relay races

Friday saw the Cougar men's track squad take the team title at the Leonard Hilton Memorial Invitational held at the Yeoman Fieldhouse, while the women's track squad finished third.

Coming in second place for the men's side was Texas while the Miami and Texas female teams took first and second respectively.

Senior sprinter Stanford Routt took first in the men's 200-meter dash with a time of 21.31 seconds, and senior hurdler Andrew Carruthers won the 60-meter hurdles in 7.94. Sophomore high jumper Tristian Whitley took the title as the Invitational high jump champion after jumping 2.13 meters. 

The Cougars also took first in both the 4x400-meter relay and the pole vault after freshman Scott Duckworth vaulted over 5.05 meters. 

In the 60-meter sprint, Houston finished second, third and fourth with sophomore Carey LaCour (6.77), Routt (6.77) and junior Preston Perry (6.78). Freshman Kolee Latson came in second place in the 400-meters, and both senior Brandon Bray (long jump) and junior Vincent Marshall (triple jump) took third place finishes.

Top performances from the women's squad were a pair of second place finishes from sophomore Caresir Hamilton in the triple jump and freshman Daneille Aanerud's in the pole vault. The pole vault also saw freshmen Crista Coppin and Ashley Ligon take third and sixth respetively while seniors Tinisha Wesley and Allie Booker finished fifth and sixth respectively in the shot put.

Senior Alicia Cave also had a third-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.52 as well as the 4x400-meter relay squad who finished behind Miami and Texas. 

Seniors Krystal Ward and Nichole Brundage finished in a tie for fourth in the high jump.

The Cougars continue their season at home as they host the Houston Indoor Classic at the Yeoman Fieldhouse on Friday and Saturday.
