RHA re-heats food service debate

Residents push for lower prices, healthier options

By Tina Marie Macias
Senior Staff Writer

The Residence Halls Association's first General Assembly meeting of the semester turned into a food-service debate after Vice President of Administration Ashley Glaw presented her committee update Tuesday night.

Glaw is working with the University's Food Service Committee, a group of student representatives, faculty and administrators reviewing bids from Chartwells, Aramark and Sodexho.

"We need more student input, so if you know anybody that's really upset about Chartwells or has a great idea about another vendor, please tell them to come see me ... it's my job to relay to the administration what you guys think," Glaw said.

The University has the option to renew Chartwells' contract, which will expire in August, for three more years or to create a new contract with Sodexho or Aramark. Residents at the meeting told Glaw that they would like to see lower prices and healthier food choices and said they were upset with the new commuter meal plan that allows commuter students to use their meal plan at Eric's restaurant in the University Hilton.

"Chartwells wouldn't want you spending your money over at Eric's because they don't get it," RHA President Jermaine Lewis said. "They would just be losing money -- they'd be losing customers."

Assistant Director for Student and Young Alumni Programs Lori Melendez, the special guest at the meeting, encouraged residents to go to Austin with Cougar Advocates for Texas on Feb. 8 -- a day trip for students, alumni and UH supporters to speak to legislators about financial support for the University.

"Students and alumni go up to Austin and talk to the legislators to pass different ideas and basically talk up UH so they will support whatever efforts can support you and students," Melendez said. "It really helps keep UH in the spotlight."
