Dine-in campus? No thanks

To the editor:

I have to admit I don't understand the reasoning behind the commuter meal plan The Daily Cougar reported about Wednesday ("Plan offers meal to go," News).

If I'm not mistaken, most of the residents I know think the meal situation on campus is rather poor. Columnists regularly rant about food in The Daily Cougar. It's not all bad, but it isn't exactly great. So what's the incentive for a commuter like me? Can I use my meal plan at UH home game concession stands? Now that might spark my interest.

Unless I'm getting a discount on campus food or something other than a free sandwich, there's no reason why I should put $300 away in a food account. I mean, that can buy a lot of good food off campus.

Troops, effort need our support

To the editor:

What anger the article ("Troops need more than flag-waving," Opinion, Jan. 18) brought out in me. I support the president and I support the troops. I have signs all over my vehicle and all over my yard. I am not exhibiting "lazy patriotism." I am a mom of three who serve in the military, and I am proud to show my support. All three have served in Iraq and all three still support this effort and the president.

Those signs of support are important to our troops. When my Marine sons first came home from Iraq and saw all the magnets on the cars they asked what they were, and when I told them they were visual signs of support they were so happy. They started watching for the vehicles with them and were amazed at the number. If they do nothing more than bring a smile to one of our military, then they have been worthwhile. How dare you say people who put up these signs and stickers don't really care about the troops.

To say you can only show you care if you get out and work for pay raises is an absolutely horrible thing to say. Each person does what he or she can. Each person's contribution is important. If you write a letter or send a care package or put up a yellow ribbon ... it is all important and a way to show you care. Do you want it trivialized?

No matter why we are in Iraq, the fact is we are there. What is done is done, and now it is time to do exactly what we are doing: supporting our troops and their commander in chief.
