Sports Cougars look to keep undefeated
streak at home
Penders says crowds have been supportive despite attendance By Sam Khan Jr.
Home may be where the heart is, but it's also where the Cougars' success has been this season. The Cougars return to Hofheinz Pavilion tonight, where they are undefeated thus far and will take on the Tulane Green Wave in a Conference USA matchup at 7 p.m. Houston is 8-0 in the friendly confines, the first time they've started that well at home since the 1990-91 season. Head coach Tom Penders says the immediate success at home has been somewhat of a surprise given that they're averaging under 4,000 fans per game.
With the Cougars standing undefeated at home in the Hofheinz Pavilion, Houston looks to keep the streak alive, playing host to Tulane today at 7 p.m. UH head coach Tom Penders says his team has worked at selling themselves to the fans in hopes to raise attendance. Stephen Pinchback/The Daily Cougar "It's a surprise to me how well we've played at home," Penders said. "We haven't had super crowds, but we've had supportive crowds. I prepared (the team) for that. I told them at the beginning of the season that they are selling themselves to our fans, and I think we've really done that." Despite the fact that the turnout numbers haven't been as high as desired, with an average of 3854 fans per game, it is still about 1000 more per game than last season, when they averaged 2884. The Green Wave (7-10, 1-5 C-USA) are coming off a close 61-60 loss to Southern Mississippi on Saturday, their fifth loss in six games. They are led by junior center Quincy Davis, who leads the team in scoring (13.8 points per game), rebounding (6.2) and shooting from the field (63.20 percent). Houston split their last two games, both on the road: a 58-51 loss to Texas Christian on Wednesday and a 62-50 win over South Florida on Saturday. It was their first road win since Dec. 4. "Winning on the road was a huge hurdle," Penders said. "Hopefully we can steal a couple more on the road." Today's game is one the Cougars are expected to win, and the type of game they haven't lost all season. Penders would like it to stay that way. "We have not been upset by anybody this season,"
he said. "I hope we can get through the season without that happening to
us."
