Boilermaker wants to be a Cougar

Homesickness is factor for freshman's choice to return to Houston

UH has acquired six early signees from high school, but just recently another person announced she was going to be a Lady Cougar next fall. 

Freshman Tye Jackson from the Purdue Boilermakers made the decision public that she is going to transfer to UH in the fall. Jackson said she is leaving Purdue because of her desire to be closer to home, according to the Purdue Sports Information. 

Head coach of the Boilermakers, Kristy Curry, has granted the freshman a full release to join the Lady Cougars.

"Tye has struggled quite a bit this year with homesickness, and she wants to be back with her family in Houston," Curry said to HickoryHuskers.com.

Jackson, a 5-9 guard, averaged 6.8 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.6 assist in 17 games for Purdue. 

She is a five-time starter who led the Boilermakers in scoring three times and in rebounding once. Jackson scored a season high 20 points against UH in the Lady Cougars' visit to West Lafayette, Ind.

Jackson regrets having to leave her team and coach at Purdue, but she said she misses her home and her family.

"I have had a good experience at Purdue and have gotten to know a lot of great people ... but my heart isn't here, and it's not fair to me or them to stay here," Jackson told HickoryHusker.com.

Because of NCAA transfer rules, Jackson will have to sit out the 2005-06 season at Houston, but will retain three years of eligibility.
