Sports Cougars fall to Bearcats on the road Cougar Sports Services The UH men's basketball team lost a hard game Saturday against No. 21 Cincinnati 87-68. The game marked the face-off between two of Division IA's most successful coaches, Cincinnati's Bob Huggins and UH men's basketball head coach Tom Penders. Huggins has a collective 559 career wins, while Penders has 539 as he starts his first season rebuilding the UH program. The record between the two teams is now 1-22 for the Cougars. Houston started the game with a pair of wide-open shots before the Bearcats, with one of the nation's stingiest defenses, held the Coogs to 1-of-13 shots in the next seven minutes and a 19-5 run that gave Cincinnati control. Cincinnati's Nick Williams hit a pair of three-pointers to contribute to the 17-point lead going into halftime and complete domination for the rest of the game. Fouling was the largest problem the Cougars had. Junior forward Ramon Dyer, the team's leading rebounder, was placed on the bench after recording three fouls after the opening 3:25 minutes. Penders grew increasingly upset after sophomore Dwight Jones II recorded the team's 10th foul less than ten minutes into the game. Despite the Cougar's problems with penalties, senior Andre Owens collected 32 points, was 7-9 on free throws and recorded five rebounds. Other leaders for UH were junior Lanny Smith with 26 points and five assists and Dyer who recorded the team high of seven rebounds. Leaders for Cincinnati were James White, with 31 points, a career high, and 10 rebounds. Jason Maxiell also recorded 10 rebounds with 14 points and eight blocked shots. The Cougars have become 3-4 in conference since the upset at the beginning of January against Louisville. The team will play St. Louis at Hofheinz Pavilion
on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
