News College architect honored Designer's death remembered with student memorial service Students in the Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture will honor the Architecture Building's designer, Philip Johnson, during a memorial service this evening. Johnson was one of the most noted architects of the 20th century, with a career that spanned more than 50 years. He died Tuesday at 98. "We felt that since he was such an influence not only on the students, but on the entire college ... it would be very important to remember him," said Brian Parker of the Architecture College's Student Council. The memorial will feature speeches from students and Architecture Dean Joseph Mashburn, screenings of an interview with Johnson and a documentary on Johnson. Parker said the Student Council decided to hold the memorial Wednesday, when members learned about the architect's death. Alpha Rho Chi, the architecture fraternity, has helped plan the event. "(Because Johnson) designed our college, we thought it was definitely something we needed to acknowledge," Carlos Machado, an Alpha Rho Chi member said. The memorial, which is open to the entire University,
will begin at 6 p.m. today in the Architecture Theater, Room 150, Architecture
Building.
