The Cougar swimming and diving squad went on its final road trip to Louisiana where it fell to Louisiana State and Rice, but Houston's three squads defeated New Orleans. File photo Houston's top swimmer came in sophomore Szintia Szanto who finished second in the 400-medley with a time of 4:28.29. She also came in third in the 200-yard butterfly and 200-yard breaststroke. Freshman Merit Bloemer swam her first meet of her collegiate career finishing third in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:07.47 and came in third in the 1,000-yard freestyle. Junior Stacey Williams took third place in the 200-yard freestyle after clocking 1:55.97. Houston entered three teams, Red, White and Blue on Sunday, evening out competition against UNO, a first year team who only had four eligible swimmers. As a result, the Cougars swam three different dual meets. The unusual format of teams lead to some off-events like the 400-yard broken individual medley, biathlon and the 300-yard freestyle relay. Houston's Blue team defeated the Privateers 32-25, while the Red team won 28-25 and the White team defeated UNO with a score of 34-25. White team member and freshman Jenny Hagen won the 400-yard broken individual medley and the 50-yard breaststroke. She was also a member of the White relay team who won the 300-yard freestyle relay. Sophomore Szintia Szanto won the biathlon after running three-quarters of a mile, swimming a 500-yard breaststroke, then running another three-quarters of a mile. Other strong finishes came from senior Vicki Blocker who won the 50-yard butterfly. Senior captain Meagan Wien finished first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.54. The Cougars finish their regular season Saturday
at 1 p.m. at the Campus Wellness and Recreation Center where they'll honor
seniors in pre-meet ceremonies. The Cougars will play host to Miami and
Texas A&M.
