News UH hopes math contest multiplies skills Math Department will host competition for area teens, offer winners scholarships By Matt Cooper
Houston-area students will compete for UH scholarships and prizes Feb. 19 at a campus mathematics contest designed to encourage math skills -- and to draw promising mathematicians to the University. The UH Department of Mathematics will host the contest, which is open to students in grades eight through 12. "I think UH should host this kind of contest," Jeffrey Morgan, the math department's chairman, said. Morgan said it has been a while since the University hosted a similar event. Contestants will compete for prizes by taking exams in algebra I, geometry, algebra II, precalculus, statistics, calculus and scientific calculator use. There is also a team event, which began Tuesday. Four-member teams will work on projects due the day of the contest; each school may send up to four teams. In addition to trophies for the top six finishers in the team and individual events, the University has said it will offer scholarships to the top students in the statistics and calculus exams. Each school will also receive an award based on how well its students perform. Morgan said he has run math contests at Texas A&M University and is confident in the UH event's success. "It's not like we're experimenting and don't know what we're doing," Morgan said. To take the algebra, geometry or precalculus exams, a student must be enrolled in the corresponding course at his or her school. Texas Instruments, the Houston Ballet and Marble Slab Creamery are among the sponsors already lined up for the contest. The event will last from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. For
