DiFranco proves that size is nothing to fear

By Dusti Rhodes

Creating an intimate feeling between yourself and more than 2,000 people cannot be an easy task, yet somehow there are some who can manage it. There are some who can take an incredibly impersonal moment and mold into an experience that will make anyone who was there feel like part of it was just for them.

Ani DiFranco was among friends Friday in the nearly sold-out Verizon Wireless Theater, 520 Texas Ave., as she played for a crowd that sat quietly during her performance only to raise its voice in admiration as each song ended.

Ani DiFranco played Friday to a nearly sold-out Verizon Wireless Theater. Although the audience numbered more than 2,000 people, DiFranco seemed as if she were simply playing for a group of friends.

DiFranco's stage presence bordered shy and familiar as she joked with the audience and talked to them as if the 2,000 or more fans were just a couple of friends over for drinks. It's not hard to see why DiFranco could manage to feel so at home: The artist has depended on her fans since the day she decided to start her own record label with only them at her side.

DiFranco played many of the songs from her new release Knuckle Down but also kept older fans pleased with a number of tunes from her earlier discography including favorites like "Untouchable Face," "Napoleon," "Gravel" and for the encore "Both Hands" from her self-titled first release.

Fans shouted out requests between each song, but DiFranco politely apologized, and said that it was a long time since those songs were written and for the night she would have to stick to songs that she could remember. She suggested that maybe they could hear them if they came to some of the later dates in the tour.

Her voice echoed through the theater with as much soul and beauty as that on her albums. In the days where Pro-Tools and a number of other recording programs that make up for what many vocalists lack in the studio are revealing many artists as pop music paupers, DiFranco delivered a pristine performance proving to her fans that what they hear is what they will get, regardless of where they hear it.

Verdict: Ani proves once again that she needs nothing more than her guitar and voice to win anyone over.
