Letters to the Editor Democrats not offering alternatives To the editor: In response to Zach Lee's "Predictable politics waste critical time," (Opinion, Thursday): What did the Democrats offer? Senator Harry Reid of Nevada offered nothing. He said that Democrats don't like Bush's plan for Social Security, but he offered no alternative. He must not care about your personal retirement. He offered no policy, only stories and criticisms. He also added that they would only be partisan if they thought the president was out of line. In other words, he said, "We will be partisan only if the president disagrees with our agenda." Rep. Nancy Pelosi of California said we need to leave Iraq as soon as possible and we need to turn security over to the Iraqis now. So, if we turn it over to the Iraqis and leave now, will that be a better solution? We will leave when the job is done, and not a moment sooner. That is the only exit strategy if you are going to do it right. The president, on the other hand, offered much in the way of policies. I have six pages of notes that I took on the State of the Union, but I have been reading Lee's stuff enough to know that he wouldn't change his mind anyway. All the Democrats are doing lately is complaining and offering no alternatives. Please do not be a lackey to any of them. I am no Bush-lackey either. Some of his policies are idiotic and dangerous and I fully disagree with them. But the Democrats aren't offering anything but "boos" and the like. Until the Democrats come up with some alternatives, they are all partisan muckrakers. Jeremy Little
