Cougar road trip saw 1-1 split against Furman, GSU

The UH tennis team comes home after a tough battle on the road Friday against Furman State and Georgia State on Sunday.

The team suffered their first loss of the season on Friday to Furman 6-1. The No. 2 doubles pairing of senior Biljana Dimovska and junior Yolandi Terblanche won against Jacqueline Eckert and Marty Morris 8-2. It was not enough as No. 1 pairing of senior Diana Martin and junior Kami Miller and the freshmen duo of Brianna Bateup and Sacha Gumbs fell to the Paladins.

In singles Dimovska came away with the Cougars' only point against Hagood 6-4, 6-4. Martin fought hard in the No. 2 slot against Moore 6-4, 6-0. Miller in her 3 set drag-out against Morris in the No. 4 slot lost the first set, but won the second to force a third finishing 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. Terblanche also had a battle for the first set against Eckert in the No. 5 spot with four tiebreakers, but a loss 7-6(4), 6-4. 

The team met with Georgia State on Sunday morning with a desire to comeback from the loss to Furman as they dominated 7-0.

The team earned the first team point by sweeping doubles play 3-0 with Dimovska and Terblanche took the No. 1 slot.

In all the team swept singles 6-0 with each match ending in two sets. Dimovska knocked off Georgia's No. 1 player Annamaria Forgacs 7-6, 6-2. Bateup stepped up in the No. 3 spot defeating Anne Breiholtz 6-4, 6-4. Terblanche stayed strong shutting down Birte Koewing 6-1, 6-1. Martin in the No. 2 spot again took down freshman Mateja Podgorsek 6-4, 6-1, while No. 4 Miller eliminated Simona Foltyn 6-1, 6-3. McLoughlin finished up for the Cougars again as she sealed the victory against Kiera Strickland 6-1, 6-2.

The team will start their long strand of home games Tuesday Feb. 8 at 2 p.m. at the John E. Hoff Tennis Courts against Louisiana State University.
